From December 27 to January 4, traffic accidents surged nationwide. Bangkok recorded the highest death toll at 24, while Surat Thani reported the most accidents (86) and injuries (95). On January 4 alone, 169 accidents led to 23 deaths and 164 injuries, with speeding cited as the leading cause. Motorcycles were involved in 84% of these incidents, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council.
Saharat Wongsakulwiwat, deputy director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, emphasized road safety measures during the New Year travel period and urged drivers to remain vigilant as they returned to work in Bangkok and other provinces.
