A unique initiative is using art to help young individuals in rehabilitation. Led by the High School Art Department at St Andrews International School Bangkok, Art for Juveniles focuses on artistic expression as a tool for emotional growth and mentorship. The programme is spearheaded by Mr Tim, Head of Art, with vital contributions from Ms Amy, Director of Whole School Counselling and Wellbeing, and the Counselling team. Coordination efforts were managed by Dr Sarinthorn, School Director and SEN Consultant, alongside Khun Sirawut, Business Manager, and the High School Estates team.
Judges and associate judges observed the event, recognising the hard work and dedication of the organisers. Due to privacy regulations, no images can be shared, but those present witnessed the impact of the initiative on participants.
Art as a Path to Rehabilitation
Art for Juveniles supports young individuals involved in minor legal cases by offering an alternative to traditional rehabilitation methods. While Thailand’s Central Juvenile and Family Court provides career training and counselling, creative programmes remain limited. Recognising this gap, Judge Aphinya highlighted that many young people lack hobbies but have shown interest in developing artistic skills. The programme allows students and teachers from St Andrews to mentor participants, demonstrating the benefits of creativity and self-expression in rehabilitation.
A Hands-On Experience at the Juvenile Court
On Wednesday, 5th February 2025, the event took place at the Central Juvenile and Family Court in Chatuchak, Bangkok. Twenty participants aged 15 to 18 engaged in artistic activities, guided by volunteers, including students from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Education. Through hands-on learning, participants gained artistic skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional awareness while benefiting from a structured yet supportive environment.
Building a Sustainable Programme
The Central Juvenile and Family Court continues to support this initiative, ensuring it complies with legal requirements and remains a valuable resource for youth rehabilitation. Despite venue and budget constraints, efforts are underway to sustain and expand the programme. By integrating creative education, mentorship, and community involvement, Art for Juveniles offers young individuals opportunities for self-discovery and discipline.
Making an Impact Through Art
St Andrews International School Bangkok believes that education extends beyond the classroom. Through Art for Juveniles, students, teachers, and volunteers contribute to positive change by using creativity as a means of rehabilitation. Their efforts provide young individuals with valuable skills and foster personal growth through artistic expression and mentorship. The programme aims to continue supporting youth through art and education, encouraging development and transformation through creative engagement.
