ICAO and Local Pilots Raise Safety and Employment Concerns
The Thai government has approved a temporary measure allowing airlines to hire foreign pilots for domestic routes.
The move aims to address a surge in domestic tourism and a shortage of qualified pilots, which have increased ticket prices and reduced flight availability. Airlines are now permitted to lease aircraft with foreign pilots to meet demand.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has raised concerns about the potential safety risks of this decision. The organization emphasized the importance of adhering to strict international standards for pilot training, licensing, and experience to ensure safety compliance.
Thai Vietjet, a prominent low-cost airline, is leading this initiative. The airline has requested approval to hire foreign pilots for leased aircraft to boost flight frequency on popular domestic routes, including Chiang Mai and Phuket.
Local Pilots Oppose Foreign Hiring
Thai pilots have expressed concerns over the potential impact on their job security and aviation safety standards. The Thai Pilots Association argues that the country has enough qualified pilots and urges the government to focus on improving pilot training and retention programs instead.
Government’s Balancing Act
Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn assured that aviation authorities would collaborate closely with ICAO to address safety concerns. He stated that strict oversight and adherence to international standards would mitigate risks and protect Thailand’s reputation in aviation.
